The Signature Series pairs world-renowned performers with LA County artists, creating a one-of-a-kind experience. Singer/songwriter Aloe Blacc kicked off the 2016 Signature Series on July 9 with an evening celebrating the music of Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell and other music icons of American social movements of the past and present. Joining Aloe on stage were local musicians Woody Aplanalp, The Brothers Band, Cambalache, The Concentrates and Fabiano do Nascimento.

Two sold-out performances took place on August 12 and 13 with Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Lila Downs and Ford regular Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company. Lila’s Mixtec Indian heritage infuses her reinterpretations of blues, jazz,  soul, cumbia and rock — even rap and klezmer — with traditional Mexican and native Mesoamerican music, singing in Spanish, English and sometimes even the languages of the Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya and Nahuatl cultures.

An evening of dance under the stars closed out the 2016 Signature Series, featuring Brooklyn-based Urban Bush Women (UBW) and LA-based urban Latin dance theater company CONTRA-TIEMPO. UBW explored the dynamics of John Coltrane’s music through experimental movement and an original soundscape in the West Coast premiere of Walking with ‘Trane. CONTRA-TIEMPO opened the evening with SHE WHO: Frida, Mami & Me, a piece looking at the life, mythology and properties of Mexican visual artist Frida Kahlo and Nigerian deity Mami Wata. "Frida Kahlo and John Coltrane are an unlikely pair, but at the Ford amphitheater in Hollywood, they proved an exhilarating match." - Los Angeles Times

The Ford Signature Series is made possible through the generous support of LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. Original program created with support by former LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. All proceeds benefit the Ford Theatre Foundation's endowment fund.
