September 21 - 29, 2018
The Ford Theatres is pleased to present The Nation Skate X CSEF Exhibition, showcasing photos and artwork from The Nation Skate and College Skateboarding Educational Foundation. The exhibit is designed to illustrate the way the simple act of skateboarding can act as a bridge between youth from around the world. From South Africa to Cuba, New Zealand to the Netherlands, the skateboarding culture connects young people by providing a common language. Together, their shared experiences create a global skateboarding community.
Participating artists include Zorah Olivia, Chris Pastras, Ana Paula-Negrao, Don Pendeleton, Ed Templeton, Seu Trinh, Nam Chi Van and others.
Curator: Neftalie Williams
This exhibit is part of the Finding a Line: Skateboarding, Music and Media, a series of events that also includes a panel discussion and short film screening, culminating in a live performance by jazz pianist Jason Moran and his band The Bandwagon while local skateboarders shred a ramp on the Ford stage. "Finding a Line was built on the spirit of organic engagement and innovation," said curator Neftalie Williams. "The Nation Skate X CSEF art show and the panel discussion on diversity, gender equity and academia, gives us all the opportunity to reflect on the experiences of skateboarding culture and provides a creative platform to discuss the past, present and future milestones of the global skateboarding community."
The College Skateboarding Educational Foundation encourages higher education within skateboarding by awarding college scholarships all over the United States. By incentivizing a college education, CSEF hopes to shift the narrative around the skateboarding culture.
Neftalie Williams is Lecturer of Skateboarding and Action-Sports Business, Media and Culture at the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism and a PhD Candidate at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.
The Nation Skate X CSEF Exhibition will take place in the Ford Theatres' Community Room September 21 - September 29.
The exhibit is on view for free to all ticketed patrons for the events taking place during this time.
On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, the exhibit will be open and free to the public from 5:30PM - 9:30PM, no ticket necessary, in conjunction with the Finding a Line panel discussion and short film screening.
