Pharoah Sanders Quartet • Gurrisonic Orchestra with special guests Don Byron, Martha Gonzalez & Tom McNalley
The Angel City Jazz Festival has developed a reputation for featuring established and emerging innovators who have made a significant contribution to the evolution of jazz and improvised music. In their return to the Ford, Angel City presents the Pharoah Sanders Quartet, featuring jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, pianist William Henderson, bassist Mike Gurrola and percussionist Marvin "Smitty" Smith. The night also features the world premiere of a new composition by composer José Gurria, performed by his 22-piece Gurrisonic Orchestra.
The Gurrisonic Orchestra brings together some of the most creative improvisers in Los Angeles such as Daniel Rosenboom, Alexander Noice, Justo Almario, Dave Tranchina and Gavin Templeton among many others. For this performance, the orchestra will feature guest soloist Don Byron on clarinet, a recipient of the first Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, Grammy Award-winning vocalist Martha Gonzalez of Quetzal as well as guitarist Tom McNalley. Gurria's genre-bending compositions push the boundaries of instrumentation and style, creating orchestral landscapes tinged with avant-garde, jazz and classical contemporary music.
