The 11th annual Angel City Jazz Festival will present a double bill of innovative artists who have pushed the jazz tradition forward by exploring the outer reaches of their musical creativity. Headlining the event is New York-based singer/composer Xenia Rubinos, accompanied by a trio on bass, keyboard and drums, will perform material from her critically acclaimed album Black Terry Cat. Rubinos’ “rhythmically fierce, vocally generous music” (The New Yorker) includes influences from R&B, hip-hop, Caribbean rhythms and jazz, delivered with a soulful punk aura. theBABAorchestra, led by LA-based composer, conductor and violinist Lauren Elizabeth Baba, will open with the world premiere of an original composition commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Society. A 17-piece experimental big band, theBABAorchestra performs oringial new works by Lauren Baba drawing from free jazz, avant-garde, drone-rock and Middle Eastern folk.
