Okay, that’s kind of an understatement.
Never mind the amazing artists who have played here, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Culture Shock LA, Grandeza Mexicana and the late Jenni Rivera to name but a few, there’s the building itself. Preserving this historic facility is important to all who cherish our intimate hillside theatre. With preservation in mind, the Ford is currently undergoing a modest but noticeable rehabilitation back to its original concrete look.
How does one remove paint from a historical structure? Very carefully and with a lot of planning. The process started with mockups on various painted surfaces to discover which method was most effective and least damaging. The mockups not only tested different paint stripping materials but how they were applied (brush, trowel or spray?) and how long they were left on before removal (called the dwell time). Humidity and air temperature are other factors that played a part.
The theatre will be ready to go with plenty of time for the start of the summer season so we can once again provide you the #GenuineLA experience. The transformation will be subtle but substantial as we restore the concrete structure to its natural state. When you come this summer, be sure to let us know what you think! Until then, we invite you to learn more about the Ford's history.
