As someone who has attempted to take up guitar several times to no avail, I'm in awe (and slightly jealous) when a musician possesses that intangible connection with an instrument that transforms a listener's experience. I didn't have the determination or love of the guitar necessary to master it; I practiced enough to play a few easy songs and then promptly moved onto my next hobby. However, if anyone has the devotion and natural talent for guitar, it's David Maldonado, who plays so effortlessly your worries quickly fade away. Noche de Pasion on August 5th will combine "100 years of Spanish guitar into one passionate night," quite the undertaking for even the most established guitarists.

"It was just in the blood." Just like his parents and grandparents before him, for guitar maestro David Maldonado there was no avoiding his call to the guitar.  He explains, "I have been performing all my life, I don't know when I wasn't performing." Specifically, David was drawn to the Spanish guitar and its rich history and sounds.  A student of Los Romeros, (often called the "Royal Family of the Guitar,") David mastered rasqueado, a precise rapid strumming pattern using all the fingers of the right hand and picados, extremely fast guitar scale, which fewer and fewer artists learn today.

David demonstrates how the rapid, percussive sounds of Flamencan guitar playing contrasts to the elegant and colorful tones of the Classical guitar. He exudes the qualities I admire in musicians - his dexterous yet eloquent technique and his undeniable understanding of music. From the sounds of Flamenco and Classical guitar to the modern day Spanish guitar; the concert will reflect the new generation of Spanish composers while honoring the past. Also joining David at the Ford are established Flamenco dancers Linda Cevallos (Dancing with the Stars), Cristina Hall and Katie Miller. At Noche de Pasion, you will hear more than notes on strings. Prepare to be transported through time and space - to Spain, Morocco and Egypt. - Molly
