Grandeza stages the Mexican Revolution
The Ford’s communications team caught up with Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet and its director Jose Vences at the end of April as they rehearsed Revolucion: Tierra y Libertad (Revolution: Land and Liberty) to be premiered August 28 at the Ford. They have undertaken nothing less than capturing in dance the Mexican Revolution to mark that ten-year conflict’s one-hundredth anniversary, being commemorated throughout 2010.
One aspect that intrigues Vences is the role of women. “Juana Gallo is the heroine of the revolution,” says Vences, a native of Morelos, Mexico, and former member of the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. “She didn’t just fight alongside the men. She led them and became a generalissima. She is one of countless women who served the revolution on the battlefield.”
